Migration assistant from old MP 5.1 (Mojave) to Mini M1pro keeps stalling.
Is there another method like cloning with CCC? Would it work to put Mojave on an M2?

The older Mac is an MP 5.1 from 2012.
My whole system drive with all the apps is less than 1 TB. My M2pro has a 1TB SSD.

I always used Time machine with no problem.
you could back up the MP 5.1 with that then migrate to the mini.
or drag and drop files with that ccc or even the MP itself.

You cannot use Mojave on an Apple Silicon Mac and you can’t clone the old disk to the new computer.
You could simply take the disk out of the Mac Pro and put it in a dock or enclosure, and then connect that directly to the Mac mini, but if the old disk is having some sort of hardware problem or data corruption you might still have problems migrating. Do you have a backup of any kind?

Perhaps you should take this as an opportunity to clean up, remove the clutter and start fresh? 😅

Important things like bookmarks, passwords etc. should be backed up by iCloud anyway (?).

Data can be moved manually either over network or by using external drives.

I did a CCC clone from my startup disc on an external SSD. Can I use migration assistant with that?

I would wait until the CCC master logs in today
"He is wise in the ways of CCC...."

most of the replies here are kinda harsh "YOU CANT USE! which I feel bad.
you are just trying to make use of a data back up.

the advice i can only give is to back up using time machine, then migrate.
I just performed 2 time machine back ups under 200GB which took 16 minutes total time.

I'll try that too. I need 1TB backup. Lucky I have an old Airport who can handle that.
Why is it better to migrate from time machine?

OK, here's where you "went wrong".

You SHOULD HAVE used the CCC cloned backup right from the start.

But you don't want to use migration assistant now, I think, because the Mini (as it sits right now) is probably "half-migrated". You don't want TWO "primary" accounts -- you will end up in "permissions hell".

Is there now an account ON the Mini?
Even though the previous migration "failed"?

If there IS an account on the Mini, I'd proceed this way:
- boot to the account that's on the Mini NOW
- open System Settings
- go to the menu bar, and from System Settings choose "erase all content and settings"
- this will invoke the erase assistant.
- follow through with the instructions
This will "return" the Mini to an "out-of-the-box" state -- ready for a proper migration.

If there IS NOT currently an account on the Mini, just proceed as below.

Now, BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING ELSE, connect the CCC backup.
Next, power up the Mini and begin setup again.

When setup assistant asks if you wish to migrate from another drive, YES, you want to do this, so...
... point the way to the CCC backup.

Give setup assistant time to "digest" everything (takes a while).
SA will present you with a list of stuff to migrate.
I'd just accept everything and let SA do its thing.

When done, you should see your old login screen.

Good luck.
