Obviously if I got the mini it would either be the server edition (slap on regular SL) or the 2.4 ghz, 500gb 4gb ram model of the regular mini. The PC is a little more but does so much more. But the mini...well it's small as hell.

What makes you think that you can (slap on regular SL) so simply to make the server work like a regular mini??

The "server" is regular mini hardware, it just has a second HD instead of a DVDR.

I've read mixed reviews on doing this. Others have said...why bother. It's the same basically as a regular mini (and use it like one).

The point is I would get a config (like the one I posted) or a mini with an external blu-ray via firewire 800 and a 2 tb firewire 800 external hDD.

Only prob with the mini is it would at base run well into $1k whereas the other setup is much more powerful for less money. But I do love OSX and Boxee on it, runs flawless. It's just a gamble using MakeMKV with OSX and blu-ray IMO. Pondering hard.

One thing that I don't see mentioned in all these threads and comparisons is not only does the server have the faster processor, greater RAM, AND two 500 GB HD's for $300 more, they are also 7200 RPM HARD DRIVES!!!! Now I have an external Lacie Dual Layer DVD Writer, and I am STRONGLY leaning toward the Server. Just waiting to see some reviews first. It still comes with the iLife software, so it seems like win/win to me.

Am I missing something?

Where did you see that iLife comes with server OS? Tech specs for regular Mini state explicitly that iLife is included. Not so for the server.

It was when Amazon first posted the new Mac Mini and Server versions, but they still had pictures of the regular Mac Mini, and some of the spec info on the Server page. I went over to the Apple site, and it contradicted some of the Amazon info. What a let down!

The only reason I need iLife is for iPhoto. We use it extensively. Also, the server edition does not do bootcamp...so never can you even contemplate having windows on it....

I'd recommend VMware Fusion anyway. You can run all the Windows apps straight from the Finder menu bar in OS X.
