I'm using C4D 19.053 and Octane 3.07 (the last stable build before R.08) on OSX 10.12.6

CUDA Driver Version: 387.178

Nvidia web driver: 378.05.05.25f06 (snappy naming convention they have huh?)

Octane cashes C4d a LOT whenever I'm using Open VDB volumes and volumetric lighting. Have to be veery careful about starting and stopping the Octane Live Viewer in a specific order to avoid crashes when importing an Open VDB, which of course defeats the point of the Live Viewer.

No, sorry, I put the 120 back in the system to do the updates. I was talking retrospectively about the Octane crashes. It's been like this since Create Pro upgraded my system and I just thought I had to put up with it based on what their support told me.

If you're doing MP51.0089.B00 then there's no need to swap anything (you still have both cards installed, right?). Just go to the Mac App Store, search for High Sierra (or find it on the main page), download it, and run it. The first thing it will do is prompt you to update the firmware. The screen provides specific instructions, but basically you shut down the Mac and hold down the power button until you hear a long beep tone and the power light flashes (your CD tray will also open and then close). After you let go of the button, wait a bit and the Mac will eventually restart itself back into Sierra. Then, go into System Profiler and verify that it says "Boot ROM Version: MP51.0089.B00".

Preparing to upgrade the firmware and OS today, just doing my backups to an external and noted the bolded part about the CD tray opening and closing.

The CD Rom on my Mac doesn't work and won't eject. Probably a silly question, but might this cause a problem during the firmware update if the Mac is expecting a response from the CD tray? Just thought I'd ask to be sure.

There’s nothing wrong with my DVD drive and the tray STOPPED opening automatically for programming mode a few updates ago. It doesn’t seem to cause any problems. I’m curious though if it has stopped working for everyone with updated firmware, or is it just mine.

My tray still open when upgrading the firmware by running the full OS installer.

Just a quick update to say firmware and OS update all went as planned, removed the stock GPU and am now running 10.13.6 and the latest Nvidia drivers and CUDA release.

So now I have only one GPU in this machine, the GTX 1080ti. I have my main 30" Apple Cinema Display connected to the DVI port of the GPU.

Previously my secondary display, a 23" Apple Cinema Display was connected to the GPU that I have removed via DVI. Now, the 1080ti only has one DVI port which is occupied by my 30" ACD. I thought I could buy a DVI>HDMI adaptor to connect the 23" ACD to the 1080, but it arrived today and is the wrong connection - the adaptor and display are both male.

Is there any way of connecting the 23" ACD to the 1080 please? Thanks again for any pointers.

computer monitors use female ports, so it sounds a little funny when you say the display is male

you must have purchased the wrong adapter for what you're trying to do. and getting a male/male adapter is not the kind you would normally want given these type of cables usually have male connectors, while computers, monitors, GPUs use female ports.

you could buy a HDMI to DVI cable m/m. so male HDMI goes into GPU and male DVI goes into ACD
you could buy a HDMI to DVI adapter m/f. so male HDMI goes into GPU and the other end of the adapter is a FEMALE DVI port. A standard DVI cable (male connectors on each end) would be used from the adapter to the ACD. That way you could use your existing DVI cable (making an assumption you should still have one from your old setup)

Thanks skizzo, all sorted now and running both Cinema Displays from the GTX 1080 ti.

The Mac has been rock solid stable since removing the stock GPU, so thanks again to everyone who walked me through this. So good to have a reliable Mac again, hard to believe this machine will be 10 years old in January and I have no plans to retire it any time soon. What an amazing workhorse the cMP really is. The best Mac ever made.

Guys, still getting KPs on this machine. I've got the latest security update installed, latest Nvidia drivers and latest CUDA. But now instead of kicking me to the login screen, the display goes black and the Mac becomes unresponsive. Weirdly, the power light stays on and I have to hold it to reboot.

Any help gratefully received. Thanks in advance.
