If it's a .zip or something or a .sit, you're going to need to get something like StuffIt Expander to open them. Make sure you're not downloading the PC versions of these things but that they are the mac versions. Mac versions (as stated above ) are usually .dmg files or such.

Repairing permissions isn't the answer to everything, you know  .

To the OT: you need to download Stuffit Expander. Then, you right click (or option click) the file you want to open, and select Open With. Then you choose Stuffit Expander to open it. If you want you Mac to remember that setting next time, check a box that appears in the bottom of the window when you're selecting the app.

No one said it was. The file opening with the wrong app is a good indication that permissions are incorrectly set.
Besides; doesn't Stuffit come with the OS in the utilities folder? Why download something that's there?

Check in your applications folder for Stuffit Expander. If it's not there, download a new copy http://www.stuffit.com/mac/expander/. Once it is installed, click on the .bin file to highlight it and then click 'File' from the menu bar at the top, then 'open with', then 'stuffit expander'.

That should sort you out.
