hide alerts but still pushing to AW

I have certain group text i've hidden the alerts but they still push to my AW. does anyone have an idea why?

Messages are "mirror my iPhone" on my AW. I had to delete one thread because i wasn't getting any notifications when i turned off the DND. now when i turn on "hide alerts" - i get them pushed through on my AW. they are hidden on my iPhone though.

-hard reset of both does nothing.
-unpair and repair does nothing.

iPhone X iOS 11.4
AW watchOS 4.1
