At the end of the installation, it said something about being unable to install and then I had no startup disk. Nothing could be repaired in recovery mode so I had to erase my disk and clone a backup to it (currently ongoing).

A lot of time wasted. Any suggestions? If I’d done it any differently, I might have restarted before starting the installation. Or maybe installed from safe mode if that's possible.

OP asks:
"Any suggestions?"

Yes.
Next time, create a bootable USB flash drive with the installer on it.
You'll need:
1. the full installer app
2. a USB flash drive of 16gb (or larger)
3. either "Install Disk Creator", "DiskMaker X" (both free), or it can be done using the terminal app.

Then, boot from the flash drive installer and start over.

Sounds promising, but I don't want to do a clean install. Can a bootable flash drive upgrade 10.12 to 10.13 leaving everything else in place?
