How bad is the iPad Wifi issue?

So, i'm hearing a lot about wifi issues with the wifi ipad (dropping signals, not picking it up, etc.). My question is, how bad is it? I'm going to buy an ipad and use it mainly at home. I don't really need a 3G ipad, but if the wifi issue is that bad on the non-3G ipad, then i might just get the 3G ipad, which has that black bezel to better recieve the signal. i'll have it on my lap, would that block the signal?

Could this wifi issue be fixed with a software update, or is it just a side effect of the aluminum backing?
