i recently came into possession of an old imac computer. i want to upgrade it to os 9. i have the disk and all but it won't seem to upgrade. even when i put the disk in at startup and hold c, nothing happens. is there a way that i can just reformatt and reinstall the os?

If it won't even boot from the CD, the current OS is irrelevant.

Try putting the OS 9 CD in, then using the Startup Disk control panel to select the CD, and reboot. Hopefully that'll force it to boot up from the CD and let you install OS 9.
