I have been a member for years, although much browsing is done while not logged on.
I have posted forum questions and replies.

And yet my points still show as 0.

How does one get points?

Trophy Points?

I don't think the system is used by MacRumors
It is available to be used but hasn't been enabled

Actually, as far as I can recall, when the forum switched to the current format (Xenforo?), those trophy points were, in fact, used for a very short period of time, but were disabled.

Since then, they have not been used at all.

I don't think I am asking about Trophy points. When I see political posts, it says that commenting is blocked to all users with less than 100 points. I see some people with hundreds and some with hundreds of thousands.

I think those are posts, not points

From the FAQ

https://macrumors.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/201295396-Why-can-t-I-post-

Only users with a history of 250 posts (user title 6502 or higher) and membership for at least 6 months can access the Marketplace forum. Only users with a history of 100 posts and membership for at least 1 month can post in the Politics, Religion, Social Issues forum. If you start a "for sale" thread or political thread in another forum to avoid this rule, your thread will be deleted. Once you reach 100 or 250 posts, you may not immediately be able to post in these forums. The privilege is added automatically when the forum system does routine processing, so check again in a few hours. The delay is normal, so please do not contact us to report it as a problem on the same day that you reach 100 or 250 posts. When you first gain access to the Marketplace forum, you will see it in the Community section of the forums.

If you have enabled the "Receive an alert when you receive a new trophy" setting in your Alert Preferences then the forum system will send you alerts when you are first eligible for the Politics, Religion, Social Issues forum and when you are first eligible for the Marketplace forum.

I think you're mistaken about "hundreds of thousands".

The person with the highest number of posts is maflynn, with under 65,000 posts at this time. That's well below even one hundred thousand, and far less than "hundreds of thousands".

To check this, you can click his user-tag: @maflynn to see a popup with a summary of his info. The number next to "Messages" is his post count. You can click your own avatar or user-name at the left of any of your posts in this thread to see your own summary info, or click mine, or anyone else's.

Everyone's "Trophy Points" in their summary popup should be 0. If you find someone with non-zero trophy points, I'd be interested in learning about it, because I've never seen such a thing here.

I'm certain @maflynn has the highest post count, because I collect and publish post-count statistics periodically, as documented in the following threads:

Ah, I think that you are confusing posts with points.

The latter are not counted.

The former are posts, - and this post of mine in reply to yours, your post, quoted, above - is a post.

Certain areas of the forum require a minimum post count - and also sometimes, a set period of time to have passed or elapsed - before a poster is admitted to those areas of the forum.

For example, the PRSI section of the forum requires 100 posts (such as the one you have already made above) to have been posted, before you can be admitted to that section of the forum.

The Marketplace requires even more; to be admitted, one must have reached a post count of 250, and (and in this context, the "and" is also important) a time of six months, or 180 days membership of the forum before you can be admitted.

You ruined my post :( . I saw the thread and was already to write a message about buying points from you in the Macrumors underground, when you decided to be honest and say we dont use them.

And sad to relate, as I haven't an entrepreneurial bone in my body, I am not sure that I would have been the right person to approach for such an endeavour.

Also, looking in the "Most Points" section of the "Members" area at https://forums.macrumors.com/members/?type=points doesn't show any users at all (basically implying that they aren't even being used and everyone is essentially at 0).
