iPad How in the world do I do this???

I’m looking for a way to clear (make blank) the right side of my messages app. Basically have it look like I don’t have a message selected. Anyone know how to do this? Thanks!

Currently, when I open the Messages app on my 2018 Pro 12.9 the right pane is blank. I’m running iPadOs 13.3.

So the behaviour I think you are after seems to be the current default on launch? To be honest, I thought it was a bug!
