Can someone tell me how I can view how much RAM in MB my apps are using and a break up of physical vs. virtual RAM?

top
open the terminal and run the top program.
example:

Run 'top' from the terminal. Unless you're not running OS X, in which I case I have no idea.

That's bloody fantastic, can you tell me, though, which of those columns I should read for totally memory required for an app?

As a point of interest, if I was not in OSX I would click on the desktop, go to the Apple menu and open up "About This Computer"
