I just bought an iphone 11 running ios 16.3.1, how can I train it to unlock when wearing a mask? I followed some video tutorials to cover 1/4 of my face with white paper but it didn't work

Anyone using iphone 11 or earlier but practice for face id it unlocks the mask in 15-30 minutes, can you tell me how to do it??

This worked for my previously-owned device (sorry I can recall if it's iPhone 11 Pro or 12):

  1. Cut or fold the mask in the middle, cover only the left half of the face.
  2. Perform the first Face ID scan
  3. Switch side (cover the right half of the face)
  4. Perform the second Face ID scan

Speaking from my experience, it does not need training initially. So reset Face ID and try again if it can't have > 50% successful unlock rate.

If it works well for you, go to Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Set Up an Alternative Appearance. Then repeat the steps above to increase the success rate.

Caveats:

  • Changing a mask with different design will decrease the successful unlock rate.
  • The successful unlock rate still gradually decreases. I have to start over every 3-5 weeks.
