i want to put desktop items into the far left column but can't. every time i move one there, it moves itself back over to a differnet position. why is this as it is realy anoying! i like to postion icons around a centre position but cannot do it at the moment!

In the Finder View Options, do you have it set to either "Snap to grid" or "Keep arranged by" name/type/...? If so, it will automatically place your icons.

If the row of icons is too close to the left edge of the screen, it will not let you place icons there, to avoid filenames running off screen. Try going into View Options and setting the grid to be a bit smaller, it will fit more icons on screen and thus move the row away from the edge.
