We're greenhorns with Macs. We've just run Timemachine for the very first time and can no longer get to our pictures by iPhoto, nor find any other route so I can see them. I am presuming (or do I mean hoping!) the pictures are still there somewhere, either still on the Mac or the external drive, but how do I get them back?

The photos might be in Photos, not in iPhoto. Do you have Photos in your Applications folder?

Also, look in your home folder and see if you have files named either:

iPhoto Library

or

Photos Library.photoslibrary

If not there, then look inside the Pictures folder in your home folder.

If you find one of those files, try double clicking on it.

I'm not sure if you've figured out your problem or not, but definitely try all the steps that JohnDS mentioned. If you still can't find them, try going into Time Machine. All you have to do is open iPhoto and select Enter Time Machine from the Time Machine icon in the Menu Bar, there will be a neat little transition, and then just back through the pages until you find the photos you're looking for.
