I have a 2017 5K iMac that supports a max of 64GB of Memory. The stock memory is 8GB + 8GB. I would like to add a single 16GB memory module. Is it possible to add memory with the following configuration?

8 GB + 8 GB + 16 GB and one slot free?

In this way, I can upgrade the memory in the future, rather than spending too much on 2x16GB.

Or do we need to fill memory in multiple of 2?

I was once told years ago that memory ought to be the same type or brand, dont know how much truth is in that
