As a first time Mac user I am frustrated that I cannot seem to find a suitable download to save and edit images and documents. I have tried downloading a few programs without success. Can anyone please help? All the downloads I have tried say that the platform is not supported or that the software is Intel based.

You should have no problems with Appleworks:

or GIMP for Leopard:

I highly recommend Bean as a lightweight word processor. It works well on my AppleTV running 10.5.8.

Hu, after 8 years of silence, the OP might already have found a solution ... ?

But he maybe found inbuilt "Preview" & "TextEdit", "Gimp", "Paintbrush", "AppleWorks", "MS Office '04/'08" and "OpenOffice/LibreOffice" etc. to be very useful for his purposes.
Now, after all these years, MacintoshGarden is the first source to look for all that precious stuff made for PPC.
Cheers and see you at https://forums.macrumors.com/forums/powerpc-macs.145/ ;)
