In all the online benchmark tests, the Mac Pro more than holds its own against rigs with Intel and Threadripper chips. The tests also show the Mac Pro falls behind in some GPU intensive tasks. Sadly some Mac video apps rely on the GPU and can't keep up with some custom/high end PCs in that area.

I dream of a Mac Pro with the ability to accept Nvidia and AMD GPUs. Wow. I don't think that will ever happen but one can imagine.

I fear most people that agree with you have fled the Mac platform. There is a petition thread here:

Sadly not many people have signed the petition:

The only people sticking around are the Apple devotees. Everyone else is leaving (or planning to do so) for more powerful PC workstations, possible to have dual CPUs, up to four GPUs, massive RAM capacity.

It's almost as though the Studio is geared towards YouTubers.

Yes, Apple and Fans have basically replaced an emphasis on POWER with an emphasis on PPW... because Apple easily wins that contest. However, Power often means the speed of the computing, which means more powerful computers compute FASTER. PPW is about efficient use of power, not processing speed. A moped will easily win a MPG battle against any truck too, but see which can haul the big, heavy load up the hill first. ;)

If one worries about temperatures or energy sipping or maximizing battery life, Apple has great computers for you. If you are concerned with getting things computed ASAP, competitors have computers for you. If you want fastest graphics processing, PC wins UNLESS marketing trickery is applied to crank down the power enough to find a level at which Silicon graphics can do some very select thing faster than a thoroughly-underpowered graphics card. Apple and Fans will latch onto that to make BIG claims about Silicon graphics power outperformance but that's like demanding the truck doesn't use it's full power to give the moped a way to out-power it. Thoroughly handicap the more powerful anything and the less powerful may be able to win some measure against it... but such a contest is not exactly fair, now is it?

I'm doubting we can ever reach a state in which PPW and Raw Power crowns are worn but the same platform... just as I'm doubting that super efficient moped will ever win that race running that heavy load up the hill. If people can be happy with PPW over Power, Apple has computers for them. If one wants the more powerful computer, the other guys have computers for them. When it comes to graphics, the other guys in general have more powerful graphics... though Silicon can appear to win some "rigged" contest if the experiment sets out to make Silicon win.

I could easily beat Prime Lebron/Mike/Kobe one-on-one if we first blindfold them and tie all their limbs up. If not, medicate them so they are asleep while the contest is measured. ;)

That apple, the most valuable company in the world, can't write a few video card drivers for their Mac Pro speaks for itself in how pathetic and inept the company has become.

i dont think its that they cant, but how many of thier new products have interchangable gpu's? everything comes with what it has and thats it...so that part is in the past for them.

I think a lot of it just has to do with the nature of an SoC, and that is ultimately where most of the industry is going anyways. Really the high order bit for Apple is to get triple A games to work on there platforms and every few years (more so in the late 90’s and mid 2000’s) it looks like Apple may be actually getting there. Here recently Apple has been putting more effort into making it become a reality. Keep in mind, just because in many cases Apple hardware looks less powerful on paper, it’s how Apple hardware works with the software that really makes a huge difference.

So if gaming is really the #1 reason to have these GPU’s, and it is, and Apple owns more market now than it ever has at any point of it’s history, then the only people that would be left to complain that Apple doesn’t allow these GPUs make up a fraction of a percent of the total market right?

I think the Snapdragon X, by Qualcomm, was just announced and it will work with 3rd party GPUs. It's supposed to be faster than the M2 and efficient.

We can agree to disagree, but IMO, it's just because apple is that pathetic. Not providing 3rd party GPU support is just releasing an unfinished product. No pride in workmanship. It's like making a cabinet and forget about finishing the back as nice as the front, it's not even putting cabinet pulls on the cabinet. It's beyond pathetic. Making excuses for Apple, but much smaller companies seem to manage without any problems.

Nobody signing that petition because the words "Force" and "Apple" are mutually exclusive terms, like doesn't even seem like human language. Apple is simply not affected by forces.

Apple has eggheads who could write the little driver thingies for all the little graphicy pluggy-in cards. As side projects during lunch of bean sprouts and chi tea in the flying saucer park. Apple, and the UNIX segment, generally, has forgotten more graphics methodology than Windows will ever know.

The right question is WHY they don't do drivers for the big gaming-oriented cards. In the current gaming climate, the juice isn't worth the squeeze. Apple lost the bead, missed the boat, blew it, and there's no way back without massive turnabout in support by the entire gaming ecosystem. Yeah, that's not ever happening.

We might see some next-level technique associated with the VisionOS. That prolly won't be architected like PC gaming we recognize today. It certainly won't be based on 1000 Watt power and thermals.

Also, Apple might not want to hear all the hate from whiny, b*****y gamers who lose their **** over one dropped frame and the ray tracing that didn't quite resolve cigarette smoke from gun smoke on your brand new 49" 32:9 UltraWide Dual QHD IPS Curved LED Monitor they didn't even test before talking **** in a grudge match and THAT'S why they got slagged after a six-hour grind. (Geeze, can one even write the word gee-ewe-ehn in forums, these days?)

Not that I'd ever propagate stereotypes, or anything. Or presume to speculate on Apple's collective state of mind, or anything.

Hold on, a SoC that is coming out in mid 2024, like a year and a half after a competing product is more powerful than it? That’s crazy and never happened before! We will see about the GPU thing but until then it’s just Qualcomm blowing smoke up everyone’s ass.

Couldn't disagree more. First, they have been forced. CDROMs that they missed forced jobs to move back.

Second, they literally can't. They can't do basic things anymore. They can't even make system prefs for the Mac anymore, and instead port it over from the iPhone. Too much cruft at the company.

Third, it's not about games. That's just so not in reality. No one games on a Mac. It's for scientific work, AI, 8k video, 3d work.

But other than being completely wrong on everything, youre right.

That's a very fair point. Who knows what they will actually ship.

that said, they are at least planning for 3rd party cards. Also, we've seen other SoC designers that let you have 3rd party ram (in addition to the SoC ram) and still use 3rd party GPUs. Those are already out in the market.

I suspect Vision OS will be a niche that won't go very far.
