Just posting this in case anyone else has the same problem. My AW was added to my ATT account with no problem, and phone calls over LTE worked great. But I could not get my iMessage to work.
I happen to use two different IDs for Apple ID and purchases. Somewhere along the line I set up iMessage on my phone with the ID used for purchases rather than my Apple ID. iMessage worked fine on my phone but not on the watch. I went to Settings/Messages/Send&Receive and signed out of one ID and in with the other. Everything working now!
