iPad iMessage and Non-iPhone Phone Numbers

I am going to be giving my mom my iPad to replace her Nexus tablet. She uses T-Mobile and a Galaxy phone. Will she still be able to tie her phone number to iMessage and get texts on the iPad or would this interfere with her getting texts on her phone that are sent to her phone number?
