iMessage and WhatsApp when iPhone 5SE locked

As above, my mums iPhone 5SE does not automatically deliver iMessage or WhatsApp messages if her phone is locked, only once she unlocks do they pop up. This was never an issue on previous versions of iOS 11. Is it a known issue? I am not experiencing this on my iPhone X or work iPhone 7.
Any help or guidance appreciated.

check if you have disabled ability of App to run in the background.

check if you have disabled ability of App to run in the background.

Resetting the network settings seems to have resolved the issue for the time being!
