General iMessage not syncing sometimes between iPhone and iPad

Hiya

My fianceé and I have talked on iMessage for a long time and our messages sync between my iPad 2 and iPhone 5 (both running iOS 6). My iPad is set up to use the same Apple ID as my iPhone, but my iPhone is of course set up to use a phone number too.

One of my colleagues just bought an iPhone 4S and he sent me some iMessages today. I've received these on my iPhone but they haven't synced to my iPad for some reason. They're definitely iMessages as my responses have a blue background.

Does anyone know why and what I can do to fix it?
