A friend of mine who has an iPhone with iOS 7 sent today an iMessage to a person with whom she never had any contact before, and this person told her that this iMessage revealed her email address to him (instead of only showing the phone number it came from). When I guided her (while being on the phone with her) through the Messages settings it showed there under "You Can Be Reached ..." her phone number in grey and without checkmark and her email address in black with a checkmark. What she did not have was a section "Start New Conversations From" (like I have it on my iPhone with iOS 8).

Can anybody explain why in this case the email address got revealed? Is there a way to prevent this and show the phone number only?

Something didn't get set right with iMessage. Perhaps disabling and then re-enabling it would get that resolved as far as showing the correct settings.
