install 10.8.0 without losing apps/everything

Hi was wondering how can I install Mountain Lion without losing everything from applications to documents. I remember hearing it was possible a few years back. Of course I should make backup of my work. But I don't want to re-install certain heavy applications like 3d software programs to audio programs. I just want it be to hassle free. I have the disc to install it.

I'm using 10.7.5 imac 2011 late. I don't want to upgrade to Yosemite or mavericks, I want to be stable for other apps. Mavericks would be a good choice but not willing to upgrade until much later. I can't upgrade to Yosemite yet I don't want to take any risk, eventhough its free.

Ok.

Unless you use Disk Utility to erase your drive, using the 10.8 DVD will upgrade the OS form Lion to Mountain Lion.

Your applications, data, settings will remain unchanged.

This is the "default" behavior.

Insert and run the DVD and you are done.

As always, be sure to have an updated backup of your whole disk (Time Machine, clone).

I forgot to add :

After you install 10.8, you should download and install the 10.8.5 Combo update.
