Instant Hotspot

Has anyone been able to try 'Instant Hotspot?

I'm a dev and updated my OSX on a test machine, but I'm afraid to update my phone and break apps I use.

Does anyone know if it is essentially tethering?

From my understanding, it's the same thing as turning hotspot on on your device and then connecting to it from your Mac. It's just a one step operation to do all that without touching the host device.
