Does anyone know if iOS will automatically update to 14.8.1, without having to trigger the update manually? I am curious if this still happens with the option to remain on 14 vs updating to 15.

Not a clue because I set my iPad Air with iPadOS 14.8 to only do manual installs. I originally updated to 15 then quickly downgraded to 14.8. I definitely don’t want 15 on it again. When iPadOS 14.8.1 was released it did give me the option to update to 15, but it defaulted to the 14.8.1 option. Personally I didn‘t trust Apple’s buggy system to automatically update 14.8 to 14.8.1, so I set it to manual updates.

Auto update, while convenient, is a risky route to take. I don’t recommend it.
Has Apple finally put out a stand-alone update for 14.8.1? I had to apply it OTA, which I would normally never do. You can't trust Apple to provide delta patches.

I doubt Apple will ever release an IPSW download file because that would allow 15.x users to downgrade. Apple doesn’t want anyone else to be able to downgrade, hence the reason they stopped signing 14.8. By using an OTA only approach, Apple can prevent downgrades while allowing eligible devices to install 14.8.1.

And the first time an OTA messes up, then we have to install 15.x. There won't be any feature updates to 14.x, all of them will be security updates so the need to install them will be high. If I wanted 15.x, I would install it and have all new bugs for my pleasure.

I *so* wish I hadn't bought this 12Pro. It does nothing for me. I could have done another battery replacement on my X and stayed happily on iOS 12.
