I think all of this is kind of moot with Apple installing their own backdoor. Governments won’t need to pay some company millions of dollars to hack into iPhones anymore ?

Most likely. The article states “Details were sent to Apple on September 7, and Apple took a week to fix the bug.” Beta 8 came out on August 31st.

Does anyone know if the current iOS 15 Beta 8 is susceptible to the Pegasus exploit that was patched with 14.8 today?
All the current betas are that old, that they need to be patched.

Devices affected by CVE-2021-30860 per Apple:
All iPhones with iOS versions prior to 14.8, All Mac computers with operating system versions prior to OSX Big Sur 11.6, Security Update 2021-005 Catalina, and all Apple Watches prior to watchOS 7.6.2.
