iPad iOS 8 Broke my iPad 2

Anyone else had issues with the iOS8 update and iPad 2 hardware failures.

Mine suffered a memory module failure according to Apple, though getting them to tell me this took over 2 months of requesting the information.

Just curious to know if anyone has had similar problems or issues with iOS8 causing Hardware failures in their iPad 2

Apple Technical Specialist hinted that the the failure was most likely caused by the iOS 8 upgrade, but unfortunately didn't put that in writing, when I was then passed back to an EMEIA they informed me that it was not covered and an Out of Service Warranty fee would be required to be paid to repair it.

I'd be surprised if the software broke the memory module. It was probably a manufacturing defect that has taken a while to manifest it self.

I could be wrong though!

Any electronic device can develop fault.

However, iOS may have been more taxing on memory modules causing rapid wear and tear ultimately breaking it. We cannot deny this point.

So what is going to be your next tablet? iPad Air 2 or a shiny Android one?

I'm tempted to try Android, but I'm also bound by the god know how many/how much spent on iOS Apps I use on a daily basis

Their hints were ********. You don't break memory by writing into it, it just chooses that moment to die.

If you're on a budget, a refurb iPad Mini 2 is a good option

Yeah, thats rubbish :/ I'd say that it was pure coincidence that your iPad went after you upgraded to iOS 8!

Probably is rubbish, but just got my case files sent to me that I had requested from Apple and part of it has some text in it where they say that if perhaps an ipad is damaged when it has an iOS upgrade, the iOS upgrade can cause issues with possible damaged hardware.

They also wrote this which interested me:

It seems this unit did indeed experience a hardware failure as had been indicated last month.

Engineering did determine the component that failed, but we do not want to share this level of detail with customers. In any case, the service strategy for iPad is whole unit exchange.
This failure is one that would have been covered if the device had failed within warranty, and is probably not anything that that customer did, although drops or other impacts could be a factor as they could with any hardware failure. I think we should also bear in mind that this iPad is 3.75 years old, and while Apple products do generally keep going
and going, unfortunately that’s not always the case.


So even though in the UK we're supposedly covered for up to 6 years under the sales of goods act 1979 and it's a hardware fault that has unlikely been caused by myself, Apple still want to charge me £206.44 to get it repaired. . . .

Because that's what iOS 8 did in a way , it was working fine on iOS 7 and as soon as I upgraded to iOS 8 my iPad was broken, so its fair to assume that would be an appropriate title for the thread

That's like stating, "as soon as I placed extra air in my tires, my car engine caught on fire".

Well if my car engine ever sets on fire while I'm putting Air in my tires I'll be sure to put

"Extra Air in my Tires caused my engine to burst into flames"
