iPad iOS7 iMessage Issue

I wish to edit my contacts. The only choice is to delete the contact.

Prior I was able to change the contacts phone number to their name in the drop down list of my contacts. Now it shows their phone number instead of their name.

I don't want to memorize all my contacts phone numbers in order to imessage them on my ipad.

Can you help?

Are you selecting the Edit in the left hand messages pane or the Contact then the info icon over at the top right of the messages for that contact? If you see a number, likely the person or the number is not in your contacts list and you can add the person or attach the number to a contact from that info dialog by selecting the Create New Contact or Add to Existing Contact option.
