Hi there. I've got a 3rd generation iPad with iOS 9.3.5 on it.
What I want to do is convert it into a long battery life e-reader sort of thing. Are there any good custom firmwares that would be suited for that?

I know little about jailbreaking, so any info is appreciated, thank you.

Well, jailbreaking really only opens up access to previously restricted parts of the system, which means you can modify some parts of the system to make the OS work the way you want (within limits). I don’t believe you can replace the firmware with another custom firmware, however.

There's no "custom firmware" for iOS devices. You can jailbreak, but would be of dubious value on such an old device.

ios 9 gives you all you need, access to iBooks (tip, just email yourself .epub book files or drag them in through itunes - I'm assuming that's your priority here given your request - and in one tap on your ipad your books are available in your ibooks library as if you had purchased them from apple)
