the red X does nothing, and you can't even force quit the app. outside of that, every other piece of UI continues to work, so the device itself isn't frozen. i tried looking and sure enough others have reported this issue, and apple's support pages say to reinstall the OS. personally that seems like a cop out response to a pretty glaring software bug. if it was a stopgap solution while they worked out a proper fix it'd be one thing, but the discussion thread implied this has cropped up for people over numerous versions of iOS over the years.

is anyone else running into this here, and is there any better of a fix than reinstalling? (which comes up frustratingly often as the prescribed 'solution' to ios bugs)

Just found your thread with no replies, I’m running into the same issue and have been for the past couple of updates. Everything else works on the iPad but I can’t hang up the call, have to force restart.
