Hi All,
I recently decided to restore (using Finder) two of my iPod Nanos (7th gen) on my Mac Mini M1 under Sonoma 14.4.1. Both restores hung without completion. It was not possible to even eject. Even after rebooting the Mac Mini, they weren't recognized.

In each case, I unplugged and connected them to a 2012 Mac Mini I have running Catalina. In both cases, they were recognized and the restore completed. When reconnecting them back to the Mac Mini M1 running Sonoma, they were finally recognized. I'm guessing there's a bug in Sonoma in managing vintage iPods (at least the restore function). Anyone else experience similar?

I experienced a similar problem restoring my Nano 7th gen on a 2019 MBA (Intel) running Monterey. In my case, simply unplugging the usb cable allowed the restore to complete.

Glad to hear not just me and easier workaround for you. I'm sure these days Apple isn't dedicating a lot of resources for these older device software bugs.

on both my mac pro 5,1 and my 2020 macbook pro *16 (i9-9980HK), i could not restore my 5g ipod classic 80gb at all. a VM with lion on my laptop did nothing either.

it would just hang and then it said some nonsense about the ipod not being found.

the only solution? hilariously enough USE WINDOWS to complete the restore.

i tried the unplug route, the select button+menu with selective timing with/without disk mode (select + previous) and nothing worked.

i am sure if i created a real mac lion installation and booted into it (that's the version my puter shipped with), it would work, but i just did not want to do that.

APPUL's "it just works" is no longer a thing, and won't be for a long time.

nice avatar by the way-- i had an 04 stumpjumper fsr expert until some goof stole it. only one in the city, and it's here somewhere. i'm bound to get it returned to me one of these days.

Your 5g classic experience sounds very similar to mine. I wonder if Apple is unaware of iPod bugs these days, or just doesn't want to bother with iPod issues anymore in their later macOS releases.

Great to hear from another Specialized owner who recognizes the logo. You're only the second member here in my years on this forum! Stumpjumper is another excellent model of theirs. Hope you get yours back. Running a Tricross here.

i challenge you, if you're bored, to find someone with a macintosh who has successfully restored an older ipod on any operating system equal to, or older than, yosemite.

you won't find it. in fact, your search should reveal a bounty of M1/2/3 idiots (sorry, overpaying for a suped up mobile SoC in a full-fledged offering makes you one) just discovering this issue.

it's quite pathetic people continue to defend this brand when it has paid NO attention to its operating system development.

i'm tired of seeing this same bloody warning in my log for OVER TEN YEARS.

and yet, somehow some way, these fools have the money to make the organisation in the UI worse and add rainbow colour themes to the menubar. it shows you a company with a completely perverted list of priorities.

"lipstick on a pig" and all that.

i can't wait to move back to windows. the fact i'm saying I CAN RESTORE A ****ING IPOD ON A WINDOWS COMPUTER BUT NOT A MAC, LIKE OPEN YOUR EYES FANBOYS. I HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE MAD MODS, DON'T LET THE SNITCH TAKE THIS POST DOWN.

and then you guys guys like, ahem, an alleged "neuropsychology guy" complaining, saying he's "tired" of people stating the hard facts and he doesn't want to come on here anymore to read these real issues. he is the typical example of who TIM APPUL is appealing to.

"positive news only". neuropsychology guy, my ass. if he really understood the philosophical definition, then he wouldn't exhibit behaviour that has become an academic exercise for this field.
