Yes it is normal. The reason it only happens in portrait is because the LCD refreshes horizontally (as viewed when holding in portrait). So one side of the screen is refreshed before the other causing the "bend" you see. All monitors will do this. Apparently the iPhone LCD refreshes vertically (when holding in portrait) rather than horizontally like the iPad which is why you see the bend in landscape on those devices.
