Just wondering about going for 256gb or 512. I rarely fill my iPhone X which is 255 BUT...

I shoot a fair bit of video in filmic - so the files are huge compared to the native camera app.

I also shoot raw images using third party camera apps- also bigger than JPEG’s.

Wondering if the new iPhones will eat through storage pretty fast- especially if you’re recording dual 4K streams. Which makes me wonder if I should go for the max storage...

Won’t iOS 13 allow us to attach usb storage devices?

Thought that was just on iPad OS using usb-C.

I’m thinking when shooting video. 2 or 3 4K streams is 2 or 3 times more storage used up. If you’re on filmic and using their extra bit rates you’re looking at some fairly hefty files.

I’ve always gone for the middle storage but reconsidering the 512 this time around.

Yeah, think you are right. Damn!

Of course you can, they've made lightning USB sticks for years. You can get 128gb for like $40-50 these days at Walmart or Amazon.

https://www.walmart.com/ip/SanDisk-...ZVcUC-uYJVgIdnl-f5DyoSR-XSvkponcaAqqVEALw_wcB

And B&H has 256gb for $75 https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1307457-REG/sandisk_sdix30c_256g_an6ne_256gb_ixpand_flash_drive.html/?ap=y&smp=y&lsft=BI:514&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2efrBRD3ARIsAEnt0ehpf8EvueL7ORyFrCL-Xu8MEGGXnDFX_P3NcQtdWQlfdStKE0IoaJcaAqvsEALw_wcB

Why spend hundreds on more internal storage unless its stuff you need with you at all times

Well... the chances are that the apps won’t be able to write directly to the USB stick. For me who shoots pro video I’m not going to walk around with my iPhone on a gimbal and have a USB key hanging out of the side.

I’m more ‘concerned’ that with the more advanced cameras and shooting techniques that the in built storage would burn up much quicker than previous models. Mainly because of the video side. I don’t expect the still photos to have much impact even with shooting RAW.

Yeah I burned through some gigs shooting 4K on my Note 10+, which fortunately accommodates an SD card. I dearly wish iPhones would.

I’m not a Pro though. I’m a peasant. It’s kind of crazy that the Pro phone has a paltry 64 gb base. Apple really will get us with the storage upgrades.

If I didn’t carry two phones I’d throw all in on the 512 GB iPhone. But some of my phone money was blown on the Note. If I only shoot a few short clips in 4K, well I could do fine with 128 or even make do on 64. So as a non Pro hobbyist I will get 256 and use 4K sparingly.

256GB should be more than adequate for the majority of people although if you plan to shoot a lot (and I mean a lot) of 4K footage then go for 512GB to play safe.

Even if you can offload to a USB key- it won’t be a constant write process which is what kkktj

I shoot 4k 60p in Filmic with the higher data rates it offers - so its over 100 mb/s whereas the native iPhone app is a lot lot less, add in the possibility of 2 streams at the same time and it's probably 4x the storage needed as shooting on the native app.

Wife and I are going 512gb. We like to video and photograph our kids and will likely share lots of that content in shared albums. Plus I keep movies downloaded for travel.
