My thought process:

2018: That iPhone XR looks like a nice upgrade from my 7 Plus 256 GB, but I won't bother because it would mean losing the telephoto camera.

2019: That iPhone 11 looks like a nice upgrade from my 7 Plus, but why does it have an ultra wide rather than telephoto camera?

Also 2019: To get the telephoto camera, the 11 Pro Max 256 GB costs an extra AUD$100 compared to the XS Max 256 GB!

It's incredible to me that Apple has quietly made the telephoto lens a premium feature.

It is if you think you’ll use that camera a ton in the last two years I’ve used the telephone a lot less than I thought I would

I thought that too at first. But the telephoto is only 2x optical zoom. The 5x digital zoom is still there (but not 10x total like in 7 Plus), so there is at least some zoom capability. Yes, optical zoom is better than digital, but the difference is not as great as it was 5-10 years ago. I’m curious to see more photos from the 11 since I’m hoping to upgrade my 7 Plus this year.

I prefer having the wider field of view option, if I need a tighter shot I can always crop afterwards, thats just me though, I guess they can’t please everyone on the lower end model.

They did it’s just a feature. Wait till you see what it’s distance shots look like. It’s no longer just a lens and a sensor but multiple photos being taken that are compiled and yield results a longer lens probably wouldn’t be able to match.

Yeah, I thought it was going to be a tele lens before the announcement and was disappointed, but now I’m glad they went with the wider lens. Main thing I used tele was for document scanning with 7+, but I got used to not having tele on my XR.

I know for sure even on my X and XS max there have been way more times I wished I had a wider angle than being able to zoom more.

I think apple did the right thing, but I get some people may feel differently.

I’m really excited for the wider angle lens. I rarely use telephoto and basically had the XS for the portrait mode. I’m excited that I can save money this year and have a pretty awesome camera too.

Discussions on this sites convinced me that the wide angle lens is more valuable if you’re only going to have two lenses. Seems there are already several third party apps that can simulate having a telephoto lens and they should only get better with the iPhone 11.

I like the UW lens also more but they should offer two version of this phone to satisfy everyone (like a iPhone 11UW and a 11T). These phones are expensive enough to offer some additional options. They already offer 6 colours...

I have never owned a phone with a telephoto lens. How useful is 2x optical zoom?
Very, i use it quite often. But ultrawide is very useful as well. Many times I couldn't get a good shot because there is nowhere to backup. The whole thing is a toss up. You gain one but lose one. Get the pro and get all three.
