iPhone production in the Chinese city of Zhengzhou is "proceeding well" despite lockdowns and restrictions being imposed in the area, according to managers at Foxconn cited by Henan Daily (via Bloomberg).

Following in the footsteps of Shanghai, Zhengzhou has decided to impose new restrictions, including lockdowns and mass COVID-19 testing. Despite this, Foxconn's massive assembly plant in the city, nicknamed by locals the "iPhone City," is seeing limited disruptions, with the production of Apple devices proceeding as usual.
"Production at the Foxconn campus is proceeding well with some 200,000 workers," the newspaper said, citing Foxconn managers within the compound. The Taiwanese company is cooperating with local government and putting measures in place to ensure worker safety. "The supply lines haven't been affected by Covid."
The restrictions were first imposed last week and come amid a continued constrained supply chain. At the moment, iPad and iPhone supplies seem to be uninterrupted, but Apple's Mac line continues to face supply chain issues and delays for customers. Two Apple suppliers, Pegatron and Quanta, recently said they would suspend production of Apple devices due to the new lockdowns and restrictions.

I don’t understand how any of this is “proceeding”. The Chinese government is forcing ppl to stay home. It’s not like they can get an exception to go to Foxconn because they are working on iPhones

A Zero-Covid approach is not going to work long term. I don’t really get what the CCP is trying to achieve.
Maintaining zero covid until the rest of the world's numbers are significantly lower I would presume. The Chinese medical system isn't nearly as robust in terms of hospitals per person so a US-like approach would likely create a lot more deaths even if vaccination numbers are high.

It's not always a city-wide lockdown. Often only specific areas or neighborhoods are restricted if there is an infection there.

They sleep at the factory and don’t leave the „bubble“. They literally have beds / mattresses on site

I completely get why the Chinese adopted zero covid - their healthcare system would be overrun by mass outbreaks which would threaten their productivity and risk citizen uprising against the communist party (possibly aided by the military if enough soldiers lost loved ones to covid).

The zero covid policy was surely only designed to last until a vaccine was developed and applied to the population. It seems to suggest that the Chinese authorities aren't willing to put their full trust in the Chinese-developed vaccine but don't want to admit that to their population by buying in/administering Western vaccines that are really keeping deaths down.

In any case, nobody here will buy the iphone 14 anyway right? Because China, Russia, human rights, etc, right?

China's totalitarian regime has "plans" to surpass the West in technology. Their zero COVID strategy is likely their way to make sure their plans are not derailed.

The rest of the world is 'living with COVID'. China will continue to get COVID exposure from other countries. A zero-COVID policy seems short-sighted.

I can see it now, the Chinese workers receive a check for zero after living arrangements, food and other expenses are deducted. I also can see Management receiving bonuses after the increased revenue and worker paid expenses...

It's worse than that. I've seen some leaked videos showing they're starting to "cleanse" the infected population by throwing them into concentration camps, away from everyone else in the general public. Kids are getting separated from their parents in some cases, when they test positive. It's not a good scene at all.

'Restricted'. How nice. And by that you mean forced to stay inside without being able to get food or ripped from your home and put in covid concentration camps if you test positive. Animals are killed and bagged like trash.

No need to be so dramatic. I'm not saying there isn't mismanagement but no reports indicate that it's as bad as you describe. Food is delivered from online orders and "covid concentration camps" are just apartment complexes or hotels reserved for quarantining, much like how a lot of cross-border travel quarantining works in some places.
