The original mechanical drive is just about hanging on in my 2nd gen iPod. I can write to it, and to my surprise, it's playing ok after a fresh wipe, when previously, there were some gaps/jumps on playback. Maybe perhaps due to putting AAC files on it now rather than WAV.

I need to open it up anyway to replace the battery, It's currently playing on mains only. If I want to replace the hard drive whilst I'm at it, what are the options? Solid state drives are out, as I understand, without taking the card/drive out of the iPod every time I want to change the music.
Which leaves replacing it with another mechanical drive, of which, I'm limited to the original used Toshiba drives?

That’s correct. You can use drives from the first three generations, but syncing to flash over FireWire isn’t possible, unless something has changed in the last few months that I’m not aware of.
