ipod 3rd generation shuffle

I am "older" and new to ipods and bought a used 3rd gen. blue shuffle on line without understanding that the volume and forward/back controls were on the ear bud cable which was not included.

I have been researching how to buy an adaptor so that I can adjust the sound but so far have not been able to figure it out. Best Buy told me they were all over the internet....

I play it on my car with a direct line in but the volume is so low I cannot hear it and the stereo cannot control it.

Any guidance appreciated.
