Just clearing out drawers and came across an old IPod Classic, 80gb, 5th generation (I think). Plugged it in to see if it still works and all looks fine.

I wondered if there was any value in these? It’s worn from use, not mint condition, but works fine - just have the iPod & charger (no packaging).

Or is it one for the trash or recycling?

eBay can fetch a few dollars for them, definitely don’t trash it. There’s collectors that will take them and fix them up if you don’t want it. Especially the 5th gens with the better DAC. I just put a 128 SD card in a OG 6th Gen. Still very usable in 2020.

Yep, there's a growing niche for iPods, fueled partially by nostalgia, and partially by people just wanting a dedicated music player that won't get interrupted by phone calls and such, especially as modding these iPods with large flash storage solutions is now easier than ever. Does it have a white or black plastic, or an anodized aluminium front panel? The plastic ones are the 5th and 5.5th gen, the anodized ones the 6th and 7th gens.

Yes, there is a value in old iPods. If you've got a 5.5th generation 80GB, then you've got a good unit.

If it had the 80GB drive from new it will either be a 5.5 or a 6. You should be able to see the model number on the 'about' screen, and this page https://www.iflash.xyz/store/iflash-compatibility/ will tell you the type you have. 5.5s are good and fetch over $50 on Ebay. I might be looking for another to help fix one I've been updating.

The model is MA450, which confirms it’s a 5.5 according to that website.

easy way to tell is the search function. 5th didn't have it. Revised 5.5 did.

i just picked up a 5th gen awhile back, got a modded back for it, a new battery, an iflash sd and a 512 gb kingston sd card. i play it in my truck and it lasts for days nonstop.
