I have a 1G 5GB iPod and a 4G 20GB iPod. The 4G click wheel no longer works. I just bought a replacement battery for my 1G and I was thinking, I would love to get that 20GB HD into the 1G iPod shell.

Has anyone done this? Does anyone think this is possible?

I doubt that 1G will support drives larger then 5GB.

The 1G and 2G were basically the same except that the 2G had 10GB and 20GB sizes with touch scroll wheels. Since the 2G went all the way up to a 20GB HD, I'm guessing it MAY be possible.

Has anyone tried doing this?

if you dont do it make sure you get the right front for your 4g, i replaced the front/clickwheel on a friends one and they bought one from a 40GB photo so the lcd in it can flap about a bit in it, make sure what you buy is from a 4th gen 20GB B&W ipod

An update 17 years in the making: I updated to a SD card and battery on my 4G iPod!

I still have my OG iPod so I may do the same for that one.

It should work. I've gotten a 1st gen iPod to recognise up to 128GB of flash storage before. The issue isn't the max capacity but the drive's interface itself, the 4th gen drive uses the same IDE interface and is also designed to support FireWire so theoretically it could work.

I've transplanted 3rd gen drives into a 1st gen before and confirmed that works. The 4th gen uses more or less the same drive.
