Base 2.6GHz 16". I purchased a USB-C to USB-C/HDMI/USB dongle, made by Apple, so I could connect my Samsung 24inch 1080P monitor over HDMI. Temps are fine without the external monitor (native/default resolution on both), but with it, they look like the below pic. And the area above the touch bar is very hot!

Will I see these higher temps if I go with a Thunderbolt monitor connected directly into the Thunderbolt port, with no dongle?

Is it the dongle and monitor or is it just the machine? I upgraded from a mid 2013 Air where it was almost always room temp to touch! Now it's almost always hot to touch!

Would not performing that much work cause this kind of temp increase with the dGPU?

Maybe I'll return it and wait for the next 13/14 inch with iGPU!

Your temps are fine - 60 deg C is expected with external monitor (it activates dGPU and has to drive two screens) and is relatively low temp for both CPU & GPU.As you see your fans are still at idle level..
I have the same dongle using with 4k screen and see similar temp jump - it is normal with macbooks having dedicated GPU which is really powerful but is draining power
Your matchbook air did not have dedicated GPU so was not heating the same way but was also significantly less powerful.
if it is bothering you you can try to manually force only iGPU and you see lower temp - but in this case why to invest in MBP with dedicated graphic..

Yeah it's due to the dGPU.

Mine sits around 54-56c while working with an external display.

To avoid the heated keys I just a magic keyboard

That’s normal. I’m using the same dongle driving a 4K display and mine is at 54C
