Is the lack of external drive formatting holding iPad back

If the apple goons want to call the iPad a computer like they have done surely a basic function a computer ought to be ability to format external drives.
would implementing this function bring the iPad too close to the MacBook
i want to have the iPad as my only computer but I still need a separate real computer to format my usb sticks
