the only ways i know to lock so far are enabling password for screensaver/screen display sleep/sleeping computer, and then waiting for each.

is there a way i can leave my workstation on but just lock it?

Open Keychain Access (it's in /Applications/Utilities/) and under it's preferences -> General check the option Show Status in Menu Bar. That gives you this:

Using screen saver preferences, set a corner to go to screensaver.
Moving the mouse to that corner will immediately bring the screensaver on and also require a password (if you have that set)
