I don't know if this is the case for everyone, but after I put on my watch for the first time I need to unlock my iPhone with FaceID once before 'Unlock With Apple Watch' starts working. Macs don't require this. Apple might have done this for security, but if anything it's the Mac that needs more security. Apple should make it consistent and either make an unlock before unlocking with watch the norm or get rid of it altogether.

Yeah It can be annoying but such behavior is there by design, not a bug or sth. I have the same experience as well.

There’s gonna be a fine line between “unlock iPhone with passcode first every time before using apple Watch to unlock” and “unlock Mac once and Apple Watch can unlock your Mac every time”. Besides, if my Mac sleeps or display turn off, I have to use Touch ID to unlock instead of Apple Watch, so there’s that.
