For all those doing a clean install of Panther, I think you are supposed to deauthorize your computer, do the install, and then authorize your computer to play purchased music.

I don't know how the authorization is stored, but I remember reading that if your hard drive died, you'd have to contact apple to recover that 1 of 3 authorizations.

Can anyone confirm this?

Here's the answer

I contacted Apple about this topic a few weeks ago, you do not need to deauthorize before you reformat your hard drive. Refer to the following KB article:

"While you may need to enter your account information again after initializing the hard disk, initializing the hard disk itself does not remove the computer from the list of authorized computers. If you plan to initialize the hard disk prior to selling or donating your computer, deauthorize the computer first, then initialize the hard disk."
