I have somehow (I suspect through a cack-handed keyboard shortcut) turned on a mode in Illustrator CS that means every time I roll over an object (not click) it highlights it all in cyan and tell me it's a "path" or "aligned" or al sorts of other things. It also makes lines appear straight across and diagonally across the screen at times if two objects line up. If I type text it highlights it all cyan.

I'm sure this is very useful when you need it, but I don't! I'm trying to finish a project and it's driving me insane....

Please, does someone out there know how to turn it off, or even what it's called so I can google it? Thanks.

Screenshot: The black is the object, and it's the blue line that is evil....

You have the smart guides turned on, use apple key + U to turn them off or use the view menu to turn them off.
