So, couple days ago I started having problems with keyboard and mouse not being recognized. If I pushed under the space bar I was able to bring functionality back, in most cases with one push. Usually they were gone if I woke the machine up from sleep. Now it does not work. I can still power on the machine.

How common is this? That keyboard and mouse don't work but power button does since they use the same cable to connect to motherboard? The flex cable looks bad externally so it might very well be faulty... or does this point to keyboard and touchpad or even the whole board under the touchpad to be faulty? Replacement flex cable is not expensive and I might also be able to purchase whole Macbook for parts relatively cheap and get its topcase.
