~/library/spelling Custom dictionary

Hi!
I have been trying to add a custom word list to the local dictionary in ~/library/spelling. I open the localdictionary file and paste my terms in there but when I type documents and use terms I know I copied in there, the spell checker still flags them as incorrect. I have the latest version of the OS but nothing I do works. I've read that this should work just fine. Please help! Thanks!

I have also been unable to ever get this working properly.

Have you tried to type the word into a file then Control-Click (Right-click) and select Learn Spelling.
