I hide the menu bar on my desktop. But it's helpful to have the clock present at all times. Apple—for reasons I can not and will not ever understand—only offers an analog clock widget. I want a simple digital one that I don't have to pay for. Any reccos?

Simple Floating Clock can do both an analogue and digital clock for your desktop. You can customize the clock appearance

edit.. I just read that you wanted a widget. I think there's ome on the Mac App Store called Widgetpedia
it has annoying music that plays when you open the app itself - When did that become a thing!?
The Widgetpedia app itself also looks terrible.

The Time widget however looks OK and doesn't play any sounds. It looks like what I show in the attachment.
Which you can also customize a bit

Edit2: there's also Widgetwall with a collection of widgets. It's not free but subscription or a one time payment for lifetime access

for a free app that's also fun to customize I would choose Simple Floating Clock. Still functions on macOS Sonoma.

Edit 3: don't use the Widgetpedia app IMO - it's a piece of crap software. See attachments

Dato has the ability to show a clock on the desktop along with the menu bar (and customize the size and appearance as well).
