I ordered an M1 Mini, after advice from Apple phone sales staff that I would be able to use my late 2012 iMac with it in target display mode, with a Thunderbolt-3 to Thunderbolt 2 adapter. Wouldn’t work. After two conversations with tech support, I was told the M1 Mini is incompatible with Intel-based iMacs. Had to send it back. Sales staff now admits they misinformed me. So, now I wait, for my refund, and to see which M1-based machines come out next.

In the middle of several books.
The M1 does not support target disk mode. I doubt upcoming M series Macs will, either.

I believe you can connect the iMac to the M1 mini and use the Configurator 2 app to revive or restore the M1 mini (if you ever had a problem).

The M series Macs install the OS first and then you use Migration Assistant to restore personal files and settings.
