Mac mini M1 chip doesn't fully shut down - Kernel panic

Hi all - new to the forum.

I received the Mac mini M1 chip about 2 weeks ago. Ever since day one, when the Mac mini is on for longer periods, it doesn't shut down completely. When I shut it down, the connection to my two monitors will go off (no signal displayed on both), but the "power" light stays on - sometimes for hours. I never had this issue with my previous Mac mini (2014), and can't figure out what the issue is. I have one monitor connected via the HDMI port, and the other one via the HDMI port of an Anker USB C hub.

I contacted Apple support, we tried a couple things, including doing a re-install of Mac OS 11.1 and a hardware check which found no issues.

In order to get the computer back to life, I need to do push the "ON" button and it will reboot, and come up with a "Kernel panic" message. I post the message below - would anyone happen to know what causes the issue from that message?

UPDATE:
The issue continued to occur, even after I did a clean install - turns out it's an issue with the second monitor as well...I thought I had fixed the issue when the shutdown worked fine after the fresh clean install of BigSur, but then it stopped again - the only difference was that I had attached a second monitor again, which I had unplugged during the new install. After removing it, it worked again. I then tested it with my wife's new Dell 24" monitors (identical) - same issue. One monitor (via HDMI) fine, second one causes shutdown issue when connected via USB C to HDMI. Very odd.

It definitely seems to have to do with certain external(s).... My Mac was already more than 15 calendar days "old", so turns out you can't return it (which I had considered as the problem as ongoing). My only option was to have it serviced - luckily, my local Apple Store apparently is considered essential service (for repairs only, not for sales), so I dropped it off on Dec 31 and got it back today. they ran all kinds of checks, even had it running since the 31st until today, and couldn't reproduce any kernel panic (I sent them my report via email). Seems it must be one of my externals which I am trying now - so far, two shutdowns worked fine with no issues, so will continue to monitor the situation and update here.

EDIT: I forgot to mention that the Apple tech did re-install the firmware, but as mentioned below, the issue still exists.

There really is no reason at all to shut down the Mac. It has no affect on power-on performance and in fact actually performs worse when it's shut down, as it does nothing at all!

It doesn't harm the computer to shut it down, of course. It's just not necessary or beneficial in any way, probably especially so with the M1 machines as they use almost no power at all when asleep.

I not only "shut down" my Mini each night, I disconnect it from "the mains" as well.

All my computer equipment (Mini, drives, ethernet switch, display, etc.) is plugged into a surge protector beneath the desk. When I'm done for the night, I shut down the Mini, let it go dark, and then reach down and switch off the surge protector.

In the morning, I switch on the surge protector, and then power up the Mini.

I've done this with my Macs (and Apple //c before that) since 1986.
I'm not going to be changin' my ways now.

And... this routine has ALWAYS worked beautifully for me.
My Macs almost NEVER have the slightest speck of trouble...

I have a lot of respect for you and your troubleshooting contributions to the forums, but this says more about you than anything else. Technology has advanced since 1986 and best practices have changed with it. I’m a little bit surprised you don’t disconnect your whole house from the power grid at night too. ?

They changed the SIL (Sleep Indicator Light) behavior on the 2018 and newer Mini's. It no longer pulses when sleeping.

When your Mac sleeps, the SIL pulsates on and off slowly. On Mac mini models from 2018, the SIL stays on when the computer is in sleep. You can customize your Mac's sleep behavior in the Energy Saver pane of System Preferences.

Regardless, the Mac should be able to shutdown properly. That is the issue here.

Still trying to narrow it down. Kernel panic happened again this morning. Other than my monitor (LG ultra wide 34"), the wired Apple keyboard (through USB at back) and the Magic Mouse (Bluetooth), the only external connected at the time was a Logitech webcam (through the other USB port at the back). I now switched it with my wife's webcam to see whether that is it, and switched the HDMI cable (once again). As an aside - I have tried multiple monitor configurations before:

• single Dell 24" monitor via HDMI (worked)
• two Dell 24" monitors via HDMI and USB C to HDMI (kernel panic)
• BenQ 23"

Thanks for the recommendation - I am testing it. So far it worked when I only let the Mac run briefly before shutting it down again, but will see what happens when computer is on for longer period of time. Thanks!

So I tried it, but the issue still persists even when no webcam was plugged in. However - I do have a new suspicion. I do back-ups to a 2TB Apple Time Capsule via WiFi and also to a 1TB Samsung T7 SSD - I noticed when shutting the Mac down today that the Time Machine back-up was still running, but I had already initiated the shut down process at that time. I wonder if there may be an issue with doing back-ups to my Time Capsule? Would you or anyone else have thoughts on this? I googled it, and there were issues exactly as I experience with Catalina, so this seems like a possible cause.

I don’t see any cons in what he said. Disconnecting completely from power is totally fine and has nothing to see with “evolution of technology”. It’s safer to do it in fact: if a thunderstorm occurs or power failure, it will be protected of any surge/power fluctuations.

I can now confirm that my issue was caused by my wireless TimeCapsule back-up. I turned back-ups to TimeCapsule off, and did not have a single shut down issue since, after multiple periods of >2h up to 10h of work/use, and then testing the shutdown. No issues. It may have to do with the hourly back-ups - maybe the drive can't properly be ejected? Not sure. I was able to have repeated back-ups to my external SSD, and it didn't matter if it was connected directly to the Thunderbolt/USB C port on the Mac itself or via my Anker USB C hub during the last 3 days, with 0 issues or kernel panics. This morning, I re-connected the TimeCapsule, back-up runs, and voila, when I shut down the Mac mini after about 2.5h runtime, the light stays on and the kernel panic message pops up again. I will stop using TimeCapsule for this Mac now, and only back up to my external SSD> thanks everyone for your input.

I have the same issue, new Mac Mini M1 owner since yesterday, the mac won't shut down properly, it takes me to the login page, I log in and I get the error message that the mac wasn't shut down properly. I have connected only my 34" ultrawide monitor, external speakers via 3.4mm jack. Mouse and Keyboard are via bluetooth.

Sorry to hear. A couple of thoughts:

• Have you tried a different cable for your monitor (HDMI to HDMI) - I initially had an issue with the USB-C to HDMI cable I had bought.
• Otherwise, Apple recommended to trial each individual external device.
• Or, as in my issue, if you use TimeMachine for backups, maybe turn back-ups off for a few days to see whether that makes a difference.
• Lastly - make sure all your software is up-to-date - maybe an older piece of software is incompatible with the M chip.

I hope you get this sorted soon. My Mac hasn't had any issues since 10 days now (since I stopped back-ups to my TimeCapsule), despite 5 or 6 externals plugged in.

I resolved the problem by uninstall Karabiner Elements, that was causing the restarts and the kernel panic.

If the Desktop Mac is disconnected from the mains (mainly for long periods), it drains its internal battery.
